The aim of this project was to demonstrate the potential uses of thermoplastic composites in satellite structures.
The project was in partnership with INVENT Gmbh in Germany and the University of Limerick. Two parts were demonstrated in the project. The first were small thermoplastic brackets with integrated clips which were manufactured by press forming from CF/PPS and assembled using induction welding. These brackets could be tailored to the specific requirements by changing length and number of clips as required.
The second part was a reaction wheel bracket which is currently manufactured from aluminium. The demonstrator aimed to showcase the various possibilities for manufacture and assembly when using thermoplastic composites. Specifically, the components were manufactured from tape placed CF/PEEK to be joined by induction welding.
